9 Smith Avenue History

9 Smith Avenue is part of the Harvard Hill Local Historic District. The houses in this Local Historic District include Nos. 5, 9, 10 and 13 on Smith Avenue; Nos. 94, 101 and 102 on Beacon Street; and 48 Line St.

These properties were first laid out by Stephen Smith between 1869 and 1874. The apartment tower at 94 Beacon St. no longer reflects the houses’ original design and scale.

This area was specifically developed as workers’ housing to support laborers in the once nearby factories.

9 Smith Ave bears a plaque designating it as the Stephen Smith House, but it is also known as the Patrick Leonard House for its first owner, a carpenter.
